Introduction

The Beijing Key Laboratory of Plant Resources Research and Development, certified by Beijing Municipal Education Committee and Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Committee, is currently the sole teaching and scientific research institute in our country that specializes in R&D of aloe and related plant products. Equipped with advanced facilities and talent people, the laboratory is mainly directed to the research and development of plant resources through the application of modern biotechnologies including genetic engineering, cell engineering and enzyme engineering, the development of high-resolution separation and purification techniques of bioactive components from Chinese specific plant species, as well as the development of natural functional additives to cosmetics and foods. The State Light Industrial Center for Quality Supervision and Testing of Aloe Products was established attached to the laboratory, and meanwhile the State Test Center for Function and Safety of Cosmetics materials and products is now under construction.

The laboratory combines research, development and pilot test, and routine analysis together, highlights its unique features by emphasizing interdisciplinary research, building up a high-caliber team of academics, experts and engineers. It aspires to set up an open experimental and research platform as well as an academic activity center that can represent the state of the art level in academy, experimental technology and management.

The laboratory focuses on capital needs, serves industry, opens national wide, and keeps active national and international cooperation and academic exchange. All staffs in the laboratory, taking a rigorous scientific approach and applying modern technologies in the utilization of essence of natural plant, has been making great efforts to contribute to Chinese cosmetics, food and natural pharmaceutical industry and related area.

In recent years, the laboratory has succeeded in developing nearly one hundred kinds of products or technologies with potential industrial application. The laboratory has assumed over 30 scientific projects from the government, among which four are of state level and six provincial or ministerial level, as well as 30 projects collaborated with enterprises or other institutes, and has become technical advisor of six enterprises. The laboratory has been awarded 7 provincial or ministerial level prizes and 2 products have won “State New Product” award. In addition, the laboratory has applied for 10 patents, established 2 sets of industrial standards, finished 6 books, and published about 100 papers.
